Mokoia Island Biosecurity Checks 2015 - January 27 & 29
It is that time again Whanau and we are requesting assistance with our next trip to Mokoia Island to do the biosecurity network check with details as follows:
Day 1 – Tuesday, 27th of January, 2015 (0830hrs to 1600hrs)
Tasks: Rebaiting an...d checking biosecurity network (traps, bait station and tracking tunnels) and weed control.
Day 2 – Thursday, 29th of January, 2015 (0830hrs to 1300hrs)
Tasks: Checking biosecurity network
As usual, we will meet at the DOC yard at 14-16 Scott St at 8:30am. As there is only 1 date this month it will be a full day, when we will check, reset and rebait the entire trapping and tracking network, and will aim to be back at Scott St by 4pm. This of course depends on the number of helpers we get for the day. There may also be some track maintenance work if we get enough people.
For those that do decide to join us, just a reminder to do a check through your gear at home before meeting us for quarantine to make this process as quick as possible. Clearing out rats and mice (and any other furry creatures!) is obviously the main idea, but we need to also check those socks, fleeces, Velcro, pockets etc for seeds, bugs and soil too. We will of course ask everyone to check through their gear in our quarantine store before heading out to the island. Remember to wear sturdy covered footwear, bring rain gear and a hat etc, drinking water and some lunch.
Please feel free to extend this invitation out to your wider networks so we can include as many people as we can in this important work. Please contact Caraline Abbott on 07 3497412 or email [email protected] to confirm your attendance no later than 12pm Friday 23rd January 2015.

Rat found
at Waikimihia
Mokoia Island is home to a number of endangered native species that just became a little more endangered as the risk of predation from rodents became more realistic. A dead rat was discovered on the Island on Monday during routine monthly checks carried out by the Department of Conservation(DOC).
DOC Senior Services Ranger Erin Patterson explained “It’s likely that the rat hitched a ride over in a bag, boat or tent of one of the visitors to the island this summer.” “We are currently conducting a pest incursion response which involves making daily trips to the Island to monitor traps and tracking tunnels” said Miss Patterson. ““Waiora – Mokoia Island Experience and the Mokoia Island Trust Board are working closely with us and we are encouraging volunteers to get in touch with our local DOC office.”
The rat was found near Waikimihia/ or more commonly known as Hinemoa’s Pool in a trap which forms part of a pest control network set up to protect the island from invasion.
“Our first priority is to determine if this is a lone rat or if there are others on the island. Hopefully this is a one off but should further signs of rodents be detected, an intensive trapping programme will need to be implemented and we will be asking the public for help with this.”
Mokoia Island is administered on behalf of the Hapu/Iwi of Rangiwewehi, Rangiteaorere, Whakapoungakau and Whakaue by the Mokoia Island Trust and access to the island is restricted to groups authorised by the Trust. DOC, and the Mokoia Island Trust Board would like to remind the public that a permit is required to visit the island and all visitors must undergo quarantine checks via WaiOra – Mokoia Island Experiences.
The Island is home to Kokako, Kiwi , Weka, Saddleback and North Island Robins. An incursion of rodents could devastate populations of these indigenous birds as rats – along with other rodents - compete with birdlife for food and habitat and eat the eggs and young in addition to attacking adults.
Volunteers of suitable fitness whom are willing to aid the pest response are asked to email contact the Rotorua DOC office.

Rotorua Review dedicated front page to Iwi trip to Mokoia
Really great to see a positive story about Maori on one of our mainstream media publications. Well done the Rotorua Review.
Some great quotes by not only the skipper of the Lakeland Queen, Terry Hammon, but also our Whanaunga members on the trip such as John Waaka (Ngati Whakaue) but also publicising the mahi we are doing on Mokoia was our own Mokoia Island Trust Chair Nireaha Pirika.
Whanau as a Trust we will be working towards making this an annual event, as well as our regular trips over as part of quarantine services.
