Why is there access restrictions to Mokoia?
A partnership has been created between the Mokoia Island Trust and DOC to eradicate pests from Mokoia so that our native birds and skinks have a place that they can flourish, repopulate and replenish.
Mokoia has housed a number of endangered species since 1990. The island is home to many endangered birds including kokako, kiwi, weka, toutouwai (North Island robin) and tieke (saddleback). The return of predators such as rats, mice and stoats could devastate the native bird and skink populations.
These situations are highly avoidable if visitors take care to follow the correct quarantine procedures before heading to the island. In addition to the threat to Mokoia wildlife, these pest incursion operations are expensive and come at a cost to other planned conservation work in the region
Therefore the Trust has established a rahui on Mokoia for visits unless authorised by the Trust or its current commercial partner Wai Ora Experiences. Where we can ensure the correct quarantine practices are adhered to.
How can I visit Mokoia then?
Wai Ora Experiences handles all commercial trips to Mokoia including both domestic and international visitors. They have vessels capable of taking a wide number of visitors to the Island and are the only commercial operator that has the Mokoia Island Trusts authorisation to organise trips to the Island. If you wish to book a trip through Wai Ora Experiences please contact them through this link; http://www.mokoiaisland.co.nz/
The Trust does recognise though the significance of Mokia to our Iwi members and therefore are open to tono from our, koeke, pakeke, rangatahi, nga mokopuna, kura, kohanga reo and runanga and other Iwi affliated entities that have a whakapapa link to our Island.
Therefore if your Whanau, Hapu, Iwi have a tono whether for wananga, kaitiakatanga, tangihanga or other purposes please make contact with the Trust through our contact page, and from there we can take you through the process of gaining access to Mokoia.
